Book Cover: Penguin
Book cover design work for the Penguin Book Cover Design Competition, featuring three books: a nonfiction book “Diary of a Young Naturalist,” a fiction book “Girl, Woman, Other” and a children’s book “Murder Most Unladylike .”
For the fiction book:
I employed a cut-out style, featuring 12 layers with different head shapes of various females, representing the 12 different stories in the book. I chose a serif font for the title to evoke the feeling of a newspaper, aiming for a formal and profound look.
For the nonfiction book:
I designed the cover to resemble hand-ripped paper with numerous hand-drawn elements, using a handwriting-style font to reflect the diary nature of the “Diary of a Young Naturalist.” I incorporated an acorn as a small logo and main graphic on the cover because the author, Dara McAnulty, refers to himself as “Acorn.”
For the children’s book:
I adopted an illustration style to make the cover fun and attractive, appropriate for a young audience. I included numerous clues from the book within the graphics, providing a rewarding experience when kids revisit the cover. The two girls on the cover are illustrated based on the book’s descriptions.
